Google's Core Web Vitals have been part of ranking signals since 2021 — yet most sites still fail them. In 2025, three metrics matter most, and each has a specific fix.
1. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — target < 2.5s
What it measures: how fast the biggest above-the-fold element loads (usually the hero image or H1).
How to fix:
- Serve hero images as WebP or AVIF at the correct size — not a 3000px image scaled to 800px.
- Preload the LCP image:
<link rel="preload" as="image">. - Use
fetchpriority="high"on the hero image, loading="lazy"on everything else. - Move critical CSS inline; defer the rest.
2. INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — target < 200ms
What it measures: responsiveness — how fast the page reacts to clicks, taps, and key presses.
How to fix:
- Break long JavaScript tasks into chunks under 50ms.
- Debounce expensive event handlers.
- Use
requestIdleCallbackfor non-critical work. - Avoid huge hydration payloads — server-render more, hydrate less.
3. CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — target < 0.1
What it measures: visual stability — elements that jump around while the page loads.
How to fix:
- Always set
widthandheighton images. - Reserve space for ads, embeds, and dynamically loaded content.
- Use
font-display: swapand preload web fonts to avoid FOUT. - Don't insert banners above existing content after load.
The reality check
Our 2024 audit of 100 Indian enterprise sites: only 18 passed all three Core Web Vitals on mobile. Passing them typically lifts organic traffic by 12–25% within 90 days. The effort is worth it.
